Have you or someone you know ever had an unpleasant job – the kind of job where it is very hard to get out of bed in the morning? I once had a job where I literally sat in my car dreading the day and putting off going into the building until the last possible minute. When I think back to that job, I realize that I did not evaluate my choice of jobs very carefully or realistically. Here are some factors – in addition to salary – that you should always consider.


Work Environment

You spend at least a third of the hours of every weekday at work – often more time than you spend with friends or family on any given day – so it makes sense to want to like where you are. Consider the company culture: is it formal and focused on rules or is it more laid back and open. Assess your personality and identify what is important to your job satisfaction to determine where you will best fit.

Optimism: The Fuel for Peak Performance & Resilience

What do you picture when you hear someone talk about optimism? Something like this? 

This is by far my favorite cup analogy! All joking aside, optimism, or rather the benefits of an optimistic outlook are far underrated. You may feel somewhat unsure about the notion of optimism given your military background. I’ll admit I was at first. As a former Military Intelligence Officer, we were taught to think in terms of the most likely course of action and the most dangerous course of action – and have a contingency plan. That approach seems in stark contrast with an optimistic outlook. Although there was the “plan for the worst, hope for the best” adage.

While it served us well in the military, living primarily through this lens out of uniform can have detrimental effects on our health, wellbeing, relationships, performance and resilience.

But wait, why am I even using the word “nourishment” if I’m not talking about food?

That’s a great question!

The reason I am using the word nourishment outside of its regular foodie context is because we often find ourselves so over-focused on food that we forget about all the other simple and wonderful ways to nourish ourselves.

What does it mean to nourish myself without food?

We forget that taking a walk in a forest with our dog is calming and rejuvenating.

That lying on your bed listening to your favorite song while feeling the breeze kissing your face is soothing and relaxing.

That feeling the grass tickle your feet as you watch the clouds drift by is as good as meditation!

We actually “eat” all day with our senses….we “consume” our environment through touch, feel, taste, sound and sight.

The Power of Your Emotions

Emotions are neither good nor bad. 

They’re HELPFUL or HURTFUL.  They either HELP you live your best life and serve at your highest power or they DON’T.

Some emotions can be dangerous for your growth and progress if you stay in them for too long but feeling all emotions – honoring them, accepting them, and releasing them is a powerful part of healing and optimizing your growth as a human being.

Right now, how do you FEEL?

Most people can answer that question pretty easily.  It’s usually pretty easy to know when you’re feeling stressed, frustrated, joyful, or excited. The energy in your body feels a certain way and even though it can be hard to pinpoint the exact emotion you’re feeling sometimes, you usually know if the emotions are helpful or hurtful.

Veteran Underemployment: Causes & Cures

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for all veterans fell to 3.7% in 2017. Having this low unemployment rate for veterans is great. However, this statistic doesn’t take into account the level of veteran underemployment.

According to a 2017 study nearly 31.8% of veterans were underemployed; that rate was 15.6% higher than their non-veteran counterparts. What does this mean for you, as a veteran in your post-military career?

Underemployment refers to someone that has a job that is below their level of skills, education, qualification and/or salary requirements. An underemployed veteran may find themselves facing one, many or all of these issues.

However, you may simply feel unfulfilled with your current role which can also cause you to feel underemployed.
